Etymology: From Ancient Greek γίγας (gigas). The word has deep mythological roots, referring to the Γίγαντες (Giants), the powerful children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky) in Greek mythology. The English word 'gigantic' comes directly from this Greek root. The Giants were known for their tremendous strength and size, and fought against the Olympian gods in the Gigantomachy.
