Etymology: From Ancient Greek εὐγένεια (eugeneia), composed of εὖ (eu, 'well, good') + γένος (genos, 'birth, race, kind'). Originally meant 'noble birth' or 'good breeding' in the aristocratic sense, but evolved to mean good manners and courtesy. The English word 'eugenics' shares the same root, though with very different connotations. The connection to 'genesis' and 'generate' helps remember the 'genos' component meaning birth or origin.
