Etymology: From Ancient Greek κάθημαι (káthēmai). The modern form evolved through medieval Greek. Related to 'cathedral' (literally 'seat'), which comes from the same Proto-Indo-European root *sed- (to sit). This root also gave English 'sit', 'seat', 'sedentary', and 'session'.
