Etymology: From Ancient Greek 'μάγισσα' (mágissa), the feminine form of 'μάγος' (mágos, 'magician, sorcerer'). The term 'μάγος' originally referred to members of a priestly caste from ancient Persia who were known for their occult knowledge and practices. This same root gave English the words 'magic', 'magician', and 'magi' (as in the Three Wise Men or Magi in Christian tradition).
