Etymology: From Ancient Greek μοῖρα (moîra), meaning 'portion', 'share', or 'fate'. It derives from the Proto-Indo-European root *smer- ('to receive', 'to obtain'). In Ancient Greek mythology, the Moirai (Μοῖραι) were the three goddesses of fate who personified the inescapable destiny of humans: Clotho (spinner), Lachesis (allotter), and Atropos (unturnable). The concept of μοίρα was central to Greek thought, representing both one's allotted portion in life and the inevitable destiny that even the gods could not change.
