Prometheus Creates Man
Prometheus and Epimetheus were two of the Titans that Zeus did not imprison. They had fought on the side of the Olympians in the Titanomachy.
For their help, Zeus assigned them the important job of filling the earth with life. Prometheus and Epimetheus created all the animals that ran and climbed, from the huge elephants to the tiny ants.
Epimetheus named all the species and decided whether they would be strong or fast, smart or dangerous.
Prometheus, however, spent most of his time creating something different – mortal humans. He created molds from water and earth, and shaped them like models in the form of the gods themselves.
When they finished, Zeus looked at Prometheus's precious creations. "Prometheus, in exchange for their life on earth, these mortals must frequently make gifts to the gods," he ordered.
Prometheus, however, was a cunning Titan. "I don't see why Zeus should control my creations," he thought.
Epimetheus decided how each animal would be.
