Pandora's Box

Zeus had punished the Titan Prometheus for giving fire to humans, but he was also angry with humans who used fire despite his prohibition.

Zeus went to Hephaestus, god of metalworkers and skilled craftsman, to ask for his help. "I want you to help me create a mortal woman," said Zeus, "just as Prometheus created men." Together, the two gods gathered handfuls of earth and water and sculpted a beautiful woman - she was the first woman.

Zeus named her Pandora, which meant "all gifts."

Then, Zeus went to Athena. "I want you to dress this woman in fine silk and weave flowers in her hair," he ordered. Once Athena dressed Pandora, Zeus placed a golden crown on her forehead. It had been forged by Hephaestus and was made of golden models of all the animals in the world. Then, Zeus gave Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother, as his wife. Epimetheus did not think to question Zeus's gift and gladly accepted his new wife.
