Etymology: From Ancient Greek περιμένω (periménō), composed of the prefix περι- (peri-, 'around') and μένω (ménō, 'to stay, remain'). The original sense was 'to stay around' or 'to remain in place while waiting'. The English word 'remain' shares the same Indo-European root *men- ('to stay, stand still') as the Greek μένω.
